Quick Tips for Swaddling

Swaddling is one way to soothe a newborn by recreating the sensation of comfort, warmth and security found in the womb.  A parent can swaddle a newborn with a blanket to help him/her sleep better and to prevent him/her from startling itself awake.  Although not all infants enjoy being swaddled, for some, it can be a great comfort.  Here are some tips you might find useful and be sure to browse through our selection of swaddling blankets.

• Choose the Right Blanket
A swaddling blanket should be square in shape, lightweight and flexible.  It's important that the baby doesn't get too hot, as this can raise the risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS.  There needs to be enough fabric to wrap the baby firmly, but don't choose an extra-large blanket.  Extra fabric represents another SIDS risk since it can slip up and cover the baby's face.  Cotton Flannel is the #1 choice in US hospitals for swaddling.  We recommend Swaddle Designs.

• Practice Swaddling
Experts advise parents to practice swaddling a baby when he/she is awake and content.  It may take a few tries to straighten their arms or even to see if the baby enjoys being wrapped.  Trying it out for the first time while trying to put the baby to sleep will only put undue stress on the parent and baby.  Experts also recommend swaddling baby in a natural position with elbows, knees and hips flexed for proper joint development, and with baby's hands within reach of out so baby can suck on his/her fingers to self-console.

• Wrap Arms Tight, Keep Legs Loose
Experts recommend that a baby's arms should be straight down and tight in the swaddle.  They also say the legs should be wrapped looser to allow the baby some wiggle room.  Swaddling the legs loosely will aid in proper hip development.  Wrapping the arms tightly will remind the infant of the womb and will help him/her settle down and feel calm.  A loose swaddle is ineffective, so wrap baby snugly, but not so tightly as to impede baby's breathing.  You should be able to slide your hand between the blanket and your baby's chest.  It should feel snug, not loose.  Swaddle Designs includes a 123 Swaddle Tip Tag on each blanket.

• Always Place Baby on Back to Sleep
Always place him/her on their back to sleep.  The side and tummy positions are unsafe.  The back sleeping position reduces the risk of SIDS.  Baby should sleep on a firm sleep surface, in a bassinet, cradle or crib near your bed, without any toys, pillows or loose bedding.
